Do you need a new roof? If so, this can be a big investment. For this reason, choose the perfect roof for your needs and wants. While many different roofing materials exist, asphalt, wood, metal, and slate are some of the most popular. Before you request a quote on your new roof, check out the pros and cons of four different roofing materials.
1. Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are incredibly common and affordable, costing an average of $60 to $90 per roofing square. Most asphalt roofs come in three-tab shingles, which creates a uniform and even look. Some people, however, prefer the look of architectural asphalt shingles. These cost more but go on one by one to create a more textured and varied appearance.
Asphalt is durable enough to withstand most climates, but without maintenance, some climates can be problematic. Windy climates can loosen shingles, sunny climates can fade and weaken the shingles, and rainy climates can promote moss growth. With good care, however, your asphalt roof should last about 15 to 20 years.
2. Wood Shingles
Wood shingles or shakes, specifically from cedar, are a unique option that can make a house stand out from the rest. They tend to cost a little more than asphalt, but they can last up to 30 years. You will need to maintain the roof, however, to prevent major damage.
Wood is prone to rot and infestation, so you need to keep it well protected. Woods like cedar are naturally resistant to rot and pests, so they may require less maintenance. Like asphalt shingles, wood shingles can start to grow moss. In the long run, however, you may save money on heating and cooling costs because wood is a natural insulator.
3. Metal
Metal roofs can be from a variety of metals, including tin, steel, aluminum, or copper, and each type of metal has its own pros and cons. Steel, for example, is expensive, but it is extremely durable. Zinc, another expensive material can last up to 100 years, but it is expensive and soft, so it is prone to dings and dents from hail or debris.
On average, however, you can expect to spend about $100 to $200 per roofing square for a metal roof, and it will last 40 to 70 years. To keep the roof in good condition, however, you will need to paint it occasionally, which can cost up to $3,700.
Many people shy away from metal roofs because they fear the noise. However, metal roofs have come a long way. If you choose an inexperienced, cheap contractor, they may install it wrong, but most properly installed metal roofs have a noise damper.
4. Slate Tile
Slate tile is a unique roofing option that can create an incredible appearance. In addition, since the roof is from stone, it is resistant to fire, moss, mold, rot, and infestation. The number one advantage to a slate tile roof, however, is the longevity. Without much maintenance, a slate tile roof can last 150 years. Despite this, however, the tiles themselves are prone to damage if you walk on them.
The longevity is a huge advantage because you’ll never have to replace the roof. This is important because a slate tile roof can be costly. In some cases, you may spend up to $8,000 per roofing square. In addition, since slate tile roofs are incredibly heavy, they can only go on steep roofs, and steep roofs take up more square footage than a low-slopped roof.
You have a lot of work to do before getting your new roof. One of the most important things to do, however, is determine which type of material is best for you. If you would like to know more, or if you are ready to get a quote, contact us at Precise Roofing & Contracting.
